Anybody speak latin?

Post by Yeshai »

As I've shared in one of my other posts, I'm working on transcribing the latin text of the Munich Manual.

I've run across a problem, and was hoping someone here could help clarify.

This small phrase makes no sense to me: "qui vos restra eleccione iussit antra subire profundi".
To put into context, this phrase is found in the begenning of an invocation. What it sounds like to me is "That you approve of the election commanded to undertake deep caves". The word I'm having a problem with is "Antra". It seems to throw everything else off. "Antra" is the plural of "Antrum", which is usually considered a medical term meaning "Cavity" or "Cave".

Perhaps someone more knowledgable than me can clarify. If you need more context;

Apolin, Maraloth, Berith, ego, talis, vos exorciso et coniuro ex parte dei omnipotentis, qui vos restra eleccione iussit antra subire profundi, ut debeatis michi mitterre quendam spiritum perilum dogmate omnium scienciarum, qui michi sit beniuolus, fidelis, et placidus, ad docendum omnem scienciam quam voluero, veniens in forma magistri, vt nullam formidinem doleam percipere

Thanks in advance

Yeshai,
This is beautifully butchered classical latin with a vulgar mish mash , otherwise known as 'medieval latin'.
The trick is , not every world conicides with its de jure meaning , and you need to look for the right context.
Here , ''eleccione'' can , and more likely means 'decision(s)' , but election is just as good . ''Subire'' has the meaning of ' subordination' .
I don't know why you have a problem with ''antra'' , with ''profundi'' it fits right in (hole, abyss ,darkness)
Thus the new sentence , since we are talking about a grimoire here , and we are calling the power of God Almighty to conjure and force the entity into becoming your teacher , sounds more like : "[That] you approve(d) (obey?) of the decision(s) commanded to subordinate [yourself] to the abyss(es) ,"
I'm sure any expert would smash me for this. [thumbup] .
