Creating a Spellbook

So I've created about 3 spellbooks so far. They are not arranged by particular theme but I'd like to get to the point where I can arrange spellbooks like that. I've written down spells of my own invention, but more often copied spells from various books I've found useful. It's taken a lot of work and I've progressed since the days where I wouldn't want to get out of my bed.

I usually use a nice leatherbound or hard bound book, lined, and with a generous amount of pages. One of the books is stringed together, and I can snip out the pages if I don't think they belong in the book. But generally I keep those pages anyways, for reference. I just don't want them to be part of the actual book.

But I suppose it would take time to arrange for a spellbook composed of original spells (ones I've created). It would take lots of studying and practice. Perhaps I could use a binder? Paper that can be easily arranged, and then copy the spells into a handier sized journal?

Do any of you guys keep spellbooks or stick to what you've owned?

I love 3 ring binders for this. You can add, remove and rearrange to your hearts content. And then when it's just the way you want it then put it in a permanent book.

I'm not as organized as you two but I do keep a magical record to document spells, workings, dreams, astral journeys, synchronicities, spirit visitations and other occultic odds and ends. It's very informative to re-read later, especially during periods of life where things seem unconnected but when you look back, you suddenly notice BIG and glaring connections. I even realized a particular spirit wanted to work with me by re-reading my journal and noticing "random" experiences I had matched up exactly to attributes of this spirit. I said, "Ohhh! Sorry I ignored you for so long!"

I'm actually in the process of writing two spellbooks, one more of a beginner manual, the other is one that I am putting all the spells and variations of my own creation in it.

Personally I am just typing them on the computer first to get them down, afterwhich I will be writing them in a leather bound journal book after I organize them in categories, such as defense, scrying/sensing, artifacing, and so on. Mostly I'm aiming for comprehensive though [thumbup]

I take a pdf to a print shop and get a hardcover ink printed colour spellbook.

Binders are good for journal work and general note taking, but on the occasion that I want to sit down and make a proper and complete enchanted Grimoire of the old sort, I usually go to an art store and find a really nice sketchbook that goes with what I want. There is a huge variety of cover types, so you can usually find something for any project you want to under take and the pages are blank - so you can line them yourself, creating your own designs from scratch while having plenty of room to draw in sigils, seals, and similar artwork. I like to use India Ink for the actual writing and drawing, which comes in a variety of colors. Work out the drafts on spare art pads and then transcribe the finished work into the chosen art journal one page at a time.

This isn't something I recommend for informal note taking and journal work, but if you have a very clear idea of what you want to do in a personal Grimoire with a specific theme, this is one way to take advantage of modern convenience to do some old school scribe work. I know one who even transcribed their own Lemegeton, each page handwritten and all artwork hand drawn to make an actual Grimoire - a book that is a magical object all on its own. I haven't done the Lemegeton yet since I have a few things to work out in that particular grimoire, but I do have a Galdrbok. [smile2]
