Beni Seraphim or Elohim?
I am researching Venus/Netzach and have found two choirs of angels. Barrett’s “The Magnus” lists the choir as the Beni Seraphim; as does Israel Regardie’s “ How to make and use a Magick Talisman” However other authors and Golden Dawn sources list the choir of angels as the Elohim. Which is correct? And any corrections? Thanks
Re: Beni Seraphim or Elohim?
Not familiar with Golden Dawn, but in Hebrew "Elohim" is less of a personal name and more of a class name. It refers to a class of entities that are heavenly, or in some cases simply being / person with a superior status (for example human judges are referred to as "Elohim" in the tenakh).
In the Hebrew Bible the word Elohim is used to refer to:
gods (pagan gods)
YHVH (The God of Israel)
Seraphim and other angelic beings

I thought it was interesting/weird that the name Elohim was used. I knew of the distinction you mentioned about it being a class name so to speak. However I guess it’s that reason the the GD and other ceremonial magick authors use Elohim for Venus/Netzach is because of that and the fact Elohim is the traditional name of fire, and Venus is associated with fire in Kabbalah. Still never really heard of the Beni Seraphim til Barrett’s the Magnus though.
Re: Beni Seraphim or Elohim?
I recall reading that the angels that met Lot in Sodom were invited to stay in his house and he provided a meal for them. Locals wanted to have sex with them so he offered his daughter to the locals.
Those angels therefore appeared and functioned like attractive humans
Angelos means messenger.
Eloha (note the female ending to the word) is usually written with the male plural -im. Thus it refers to both males and females
The El comes from the Sumerian Ilu - meaning a tall person and a "god"
Thus El Elyon means tall-tall god - The Most High. The same word in Sumerian is Alalu
(The pronunciations are a bit tricky as the voice recordings of that time did not survive)
It may be better to abandon the religious filter when looking at non-human players
