My First tarot deck.

Post by Occult Forum Archive »

I bought my first tarot deck today, a Rider-Waite Tarot deck. They also had a dragon one, ut that one seemed to fluffy. I wanted the Ibis deck, but they didn't have it. Yes, I bought it myself, and wans;t given to me as a gift.

My experinces: i'm used to using the ibis deck on http://www.tarot.com, so this cards symbolism was somewhat hard to get, but iwthin one day, I'm, getting better at intrpreting it. Apparently my fourth read was perfect, according to my friend.

Any suggestions? I did a 3 card spread, and have done a 9 card spread for her as well.
Peace.

Yes I have a suggestion. STudy hard for the next five years minimum, keep a daily Tarot journal, take the BOTA course, practise practise practise, get Mary Greers and Rachel Pollack's books, Amber Jayanti's Living the Tarot, and dont do readings for others until you know every card rightside up and reversed - cold. Then you can start to comprehehend how they modify each other in patterns.

stick to the Waite system, too, for now.

Have fun, but remember you cant be a reader in five easy steps, or in three readings eitehr. Tarot is a lifelong practise and an extremely subtle art. It's far more than a divinatory tool, too.

I agree with Feranaja. When I first was learning tarot I had gotten every book I could find on tarot prior to having a deck. I made my first deck I ever owned and kept a daily journal of tarot readings I did. I would right down my interpretions an write down any visions I was getting while interpretting the cards. I didn't have any formal teacher per se though I knew and still know a number of tarot readers and would ask them a while bunch of questions. However I would reccomend having a formal teacher :) Read all the books you can find on tarot, ask a bunch of questions, go to all the sites you can find. I work primarily with modern deks but traditional decks teach you the basics and give you a better understanding when you do work with modern decks.

Im impressed you made your own deck, DP. Tarot is such an ongoing process, and making your own images is incredibly powerful. I've beenworking on my own deck (the EarthSong) for what seems a long long time now. Kudos to you for completing your work...any chacne of us seeing a few images sometime?

I know I've said this before, but I had been a professional reader for close to ten years when I took the BOTA course, and I was blown away by how much I gained just from colouring the deck (and their lessons of course). A lot of things that you cant put into words, too. I never had a teacher, but I've taught (groups and privately) for 15 years and I learn through teaching all the time. Its a lot more fun than reading actually. ;)

I'm playing around a lot these days with my Alchemical deck, btw - and I love it. ;)

When I first started with Tarot I read all these great books for a few years before having a deck of my own and looked everywhere for a traditional deck that I liked. None of the tradition decks called to me, only modern decks, which is a pain when you're a newbie. Since everyone I knew kept telling me to get a traditional deck to learn and understand all the basics I passed on the modern decks till a few years later. I gave up on finding a tradition calling to me and decided I would make my own deck. It was the first deck I ever owned. I had each card laminated and it was fun to do. It was after I made my own deck and used it for a while that I found the Chinese Deck later which was the first deck I had bought for myself. It's one of the few traditional decks I still own.

I would not reccomend my method to any newbie out there but I would reccomend reading every book you can possibly find on tarot no matter how odd it may seem. It'll help you understand the basics.

I stock a ton of decks at sigilz. Its alot of fun getting new stock and checking them all out. In retrospect after dealing with tarot for years I would tell you to ditch the books. I know there are tons out there but I really think I could write a better book than anything I have seen by shifting the focus. ( I should quit bitching and do it I know)

A few ideas for newbies I could throw out there. It may seem gibberish but its just my 2 cents on it.

Dont try to memorize cards. This is how 90% of books are cobbled together. Here is a card, this is what it means, here is another card, this is what it means ect ect ect.
thats what 78 cards in a standard deck you have to memorize? Its alot of bs IMO. Instead of trying to cram all the front end info into your skull and taking years to do it break it down how the system is set up.

Example:
Lay out all the minor cards 1-10 in four rows. Learn the basic concepts of the suits. Then learn the numerology meanings of the numbers. Cross refrence these in your head then read the book meanings. This central idea is fluffed up in most books but you will see the idea they are explaining.

So instead of memorizing the 40 cards now you have to know 14 meanings and connect them. 1-10 and 4 suits.
The face cards are subsections to the suit.
princess/page= earth, prince=air, queen=water , knight= fire. SOme decks vary here but that is what the face cards are. 4 elements within the element. so what concepts of water fall in fire? Queen of wands would be water of fire.

trump cards? Hell dont get hung up on the card itself. They are representations of planets, zodiac and elements.

I dont know if any of that would even make sense toa newbie. I may just be blowing in the wind here. But I know for myself tarot made no rhyme or reason till I saw this method.

See the common threads of wands, of sixes, fives and queens. It made things much more clear and easy to understand. Learning the structure was easier than trying to memorize 78 cards.

Just my 2 cents.

Book of thoth is the best tarot book out there for me. I still read it often. But I dig Uncle Al so I am biased.

I , like Sigilz, am biased. But it is a good book and I adore the Thoth Deck... if you do look into the Book be sure to examine it in comparison to Rider-Waite for some interesting insight.
