divination or self fulfilled prophesy?

I recently bought a pendulum and have been expierimenting with it for the past couple days. Yesterday, I asked if I was gonna have a crappy night at work and the pendulum indicated that, yes, i was gonna have a crappy night at work. Well, sure enough, it was crappy! What made it crappy were two mistakes that I made. Now my question is this: How does one know if one has divined the future foretold by whatever one's prefered method of divination or was subconciously fulfilling the prophesy- esp. if was due to mistakes one makes themselves?
