Is it possible to make your own tarrot cards? I like to draw so I was wondering if it would be wrong to make a deck on my own? Comments? Suggestions?

There's the BOTA deck that's black and white so the user can color it himself.
In the Golden Dawn, initiates were expected to build their own deck from the information they were given.
Sounds like a decent idea to me.

Of course you can make your own cards...you might begin with just the Major Arcana.

Actually I would reccomend that anybody with the time and energy and desire to make their own deck. It will work best for you because you know yourself better than anybody else. I made the first deck of tarot cards I ever had. I bought poster board, used a metre stick to measure each card, drew the images myself, inked and coloured the cards, then paid to have the cards laminated so that they could be used on a regular basis. Be ceative with the cards. Don't feel bound to having a deck that is purely traditional. If you want to create new cards for the deck go for it
However if I were you I'd wait til Mercury went direct again instead of working on your cards now while Mercury is in retrogrde. By creating them while Mercury is direct it ensures a great deck that won't have any problems for you later on down the line.

You know you can actually use regular playing cards for divination. At one time during the late 1800's to 1900's it was quite common to just use regular playing decks.

How? Do you give the cards meanings and interpret?

To answer the qustion of needing to learn the cards first. I would say it's up to you. Do you feel you have to know the meanings of the cards before making them or do you feel that having a physical deck will be what's needed so that you can learn the meaning of the cards.
There are many books and sites on how to read tarot and their meanings as well. I ended up knowing the meaning of the cards prior to having any decks. However I don't think it's neccesary for everybody to do, since we all learn differently.

Dracophoenix's approach is a good one to try out. I dont think there has ever been any uniform method of doing it. Each diviner used their own methods and has special meaning for them. The cards are only the instrument but you are the master interpreter. If you must insist I know you can find some old fortune telling books on ebay telling you how to use regular playing cards but from my tiny collection of booklets there really isnt any consistency.
Heres site for you to check out.
I don't really know anything about the tarrot except that theres cards. Do I need to learn about it first?
Drawing your own cards seems to be a great way of learning what the cards are about. But you do need to know what to draw, meaning you need to have knowledge on tarot traditions unless you want to make your own type of divination cards that has no connection with tarot.
Seems like a good idea to get hold of some information of how many cards there are and what kind of cards there are. The Raider Waite cards are usually regarded as the most basic so you could start having a look at those. Then you could start making rough sketches of the cards along the line of getting to know the cards. Then when you have made rough sketches of all the cards you know a lot more so you can make great cards.
It is also a good idea to look at other traditions than Raider Waite along the line.

Do the back of the cards have to be drawn so you cant tell when the card is reversed until you flip it? Or doesnâ??t it matter?

True_Undead,
That is really up to you, but I would say that if you work with reversed meanings it would make sense to have a symmetrical back, but tarot is a subject where people find their own way so find out a way that works for you.

I agree with you. It's up to you, True_Undead. You can make your cards any way you please. Originally there were no reverse meanings in Tarot Cards. Some will tell you it's unneccesary. It's up to you whether you use reverals. Some decks I have I will not use reversals for others I won't.

Some of the decks I have don't like having the cards reversed and will give me a migraine because of it.

I think I'll start with the Major Arcana. I'll look in the encyclopedia at the names(theres 21 I think). What's a good time to start?

I think it's a great idea to build your own deck. Also, you can make it anyway you want, so It can be easier to interpret. You can draw your own symbols, pictures and so on. Makes me want to make a personal deck too :-P.

and i beleive discordians have a different tarot... try making up your own cards!
ill bet that would be loads of fun... basically come up with a specified number of abstract concepts, illustrate those concepts, and shuffle the concept cards

Creating your own deck will empower it. IT will have a better sensitivity to energy that a manufacutred deck. Note though that meanings shouldn't stray from their accepted meaning. You can't have the death card actually mean "Death". But I highly reccomend try to make your own deck, just have a book of card definitions in front of you and make an image which will help you remember the card's meaning.

If i were to make my own deck, i'd use norse mythology as the theme. I'd use darker tones then the viking and norse tarots.
