where to find this quote?
Original post: fetus454
The Master Jesus said it this way:
If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.
Can anyone tell me where to find this quote. It was sent to me by a friend, but I don't know where it's from.
Also any ideas on what it means to each of you would be interesting to hear as well.

Hmmm, either that is a liberal translation from the Gospels or its not from the Bible but maybe one of the Gnositc scriptures. Try doing a Google.com search on it. But it reads like a Jesus quote

Gospel of Thomas, verse 70.
To me, it means that one must bring the spirit and soul out and turn them into functional units of awareness and practicality.

HEY!! I am glad to see somebody else jumping in to give info. Thank you Chahel.
Anathema_Oracle, I was not completely sure if you were making a joke or not....
.... Please forgive me for taking this literally if you meant a bit of humor. The answer there is, no, there is no abortion context in this text. Let me post another translation that may make it a bit more clear.....
Jesus said, "That which you have will save you if you bring it forth from yourselves. That which you do not have within you will kill you if you do not have it within you."
That was Lambdin, here is Patterson and Robinson....
"If you bring it into being within you, (then) that which you have will save you. If you do not have it within you, (then) that which you do not have within you [will] kill you."
And Blatz....
Jesus said: If you have gained this within you, what you have will save you. If you do not have this in [you], what you do not have in you [will] kill you.
This is about the destinction between the awakened spirit and the unawakened person.... or the person without a spirit. The possibility of the spirit is within, but the actuality is something that grows outside and is "put on". The point is, if you don't have a spirit inside, you will die when your body dies... just as atheists today say you will. Without pneuma, one has not actually attained life.

Thanks for the welcome, pmcv. I'm not a scholar, by any means, but it is a subject that I would like to learn much more about. I have the translations of the gnostic works, but for the most part, they confuse and intrigue me.
Anathema_Oracle - dang it, now I have images of babies that refuse to be birthed. Arghh!
pmcv, what you wrote resonates with me, but I am not sure if I understood you properly. Did I miss the boat with my answer or is it the same? Do you mean that part of us which comes forward? I know that I am not making sense here and I am not trying to be difficult, I'm just missing the right words, it seems. Ex: In dreaming or obe practice, I find myself falling asleep and then a second body, which is mine, comes forward. That body is capable of much more than the regular one that I was just in. When the sleep comes, the body moving forward seems to shift my awareness into it. Is that the spirit or the soul. Sorry about the confusion, I'm almost asleep.

Yes I don't think the actual biblical reference was about Abortion, but I used some deductive reasoning to ascertain why the original poster may have been sent that specific quote.
And the posters name is fetus! lol I was being creative.

Thanks for the help everyone. Anathema_Oracle, I can easily understand how you might put the dots together and think abortion. LOL, but I don't think that's why I was sent the quote.
"Jesus said: If you have gained this within you, what you have will save you. If you do not have this in [you], what you do not have in you [will] kill you."
The first part of the quote seems easy for me to understand. "If you have gained this within you, what you have will save you"
Maybe along the lines of, if you have awakened the god within, you will save yourself.
The second part of the quote "If you do not have this in [you], what you do not have in you [will] kill you."
I'm a little less clear on this part, because wouldn't every person have divinity within them?
Some awakened and aware, and others sleeping & unaware of divinity within.
I'll have to give more thought to "what you do not have in you [will] kill you."
