What is your purpose for doing magic?

Post by Occult Forum Archive »

Original post: Grey Magician

NecroMage's thread in the CM forum about why he practices magic inspired me to make this thread. While it goes into deep explanation and conversation of why he does what he does, i still would like to know why everyone else practices magic. Is it to enhance your life, to make your life easier, to connect yourself to the divine or what. Please go into detail. Here is why i do what i do.

I practice magic because i feel like i have been called to it. I think there was a reason why i started to practice and why magic was so appealing to me and why it was revealed to me in that time of my life. I feel i am going to need it somehow in the future and i am mean't to help people with it. This is all something that i know in the back of my head, not something that made me think to do this, not something that inspired me, just something i have known in the back of my head.

That is my reason, what is your's?

Sincerely,

GM

the reason i went into magic was my sense of wanting to help. like those in sudan for example i wish i could do something but cant as i barely have enough money to even get food over there and the food will probably be only enough for one person and it isnt enough for me. this is the reason i went into magic is to help those in need.

another example is that i felt that magic was natural with me and that i have somehow a calling for it or that i belong with magic. i dont know it is hard to explain this last reason but it is truly hard to explain.

I am learning because I believe that magick is the most important discipline I can learn. I see a connection to psychology as well as spirituality, and I seek to unite spiritual practices into everything that I do, and vise versa.

Wiseone i know the feeling. Knowing you are meant to do it in the back of your head, it just seems right when you do it. You are not alone.

Any other's?

Yes indeed grey magician.

I got into magic at a later stage of my lifelong pursuit of my calling. I wish I could describe it but I can't. God, Ultimate, Void, Chaos, Eheieh, Tao- whatever you shout when you're getting a blow-job. To avoid confusing myself, I gave 'it' a number -- 625 -- which reminds me that I must never think that I've sussed it out.

I feel summoned by this '625'. To answer this summons I must continually transcend myself. In doing so, I am finding that I can twitch away the veil of our shared reality.

Further, as a sorcerer I can change this shared reality into something more to my liking which assists my answering the summons.

Furthermore, I need to share this with others and not keep it to myself.

This gave me a jolt when I read it; I have tried to explain this to others, but they have not really understood this feeling of being called to it or the intense peace and home at last feeling you get when you accept it.

Can't say more. There is no more to say.

I originally wrote this in NecroMage's thread, but I think it's more on-topic in this one, so I'm moving it here.

I practice alchemy for three reasons...

1. to use my mind to its fullest potential
2. to catalyze the evolution of the human mind
3. to have fun

I practice magick because it happens.

It's the same reason I write fiction, the same reason I can be standing in line at a Deli and air-drumming to practice. It's because there's something in me that resonated the first time I picked up a book on magick (it was Wiccan in flavor, but I've forgiven myself that ;p). I realized, Hey.... this stuff could work. I tried, it worked. I never stopped.

Discovered Phil Hine and Pete C., and the rest is history. A meta-paradigm that explains, semi-cohesively, how all the other paradigms are able to coexist while many of them seem to preclude each other. Started doing some real, down and dirty results-oriented magick and saw it work.

The first time I realized, "Magick Works!" I had an epiphany of sorts, and I've since been honing my control.

Why?

Because it's the best way to cheat in the game of Life.

Oh, I forgot to mention...

I'm an alchemist because alchemy puts a smile on my face.

I'm happy when I'm buried beneath words, theories, and books.

I'm practising magick beacause I believe it's mankinds only escape from extinction. And of course the only way to travel through the tree dimensions of standard world, and through the uncountable dimension of spirit and time. It's a natural way to express my self and something to use as a tool of mind.

Years ago I was a practitioner of Wicca....I guess I did it because I needed something to believe in because I didn't believe in myself....not to knock Wicca in any way....but I lost interest in it and began a quest for knowldege, perhaps a quest for myself....at this place and time I find my self not a practitioner of any art, per-say...but merely collector of knowldege, more a Sage than a Mage...and yet, I do not even think I could justifiably call myself that at this point and time...but it is something to aspire to....just waiting for something to click...

since I have found the occult, I have worked out most of my mysterys. I have sort of lost my inner voice and i'm not so clever without it, I have little contentness without magick now and feel my mind is abused and lost, and when I found it I knew I was seriously deprived.

I do not like the occult, but it is part of me now

I started studying magick out of curiosity and a sense of trying to fill the emptyness that I felt. I now feel that I have found my path and that magick is a way to reveal the greater Truth and move towards enlightenment.

When i practice magic i get excited, make's me more happy. Especially when the spell i do works good, it just inspires me to do more magic. It is the extreme excitement after your magic works and then there is the extreme excitement when you are about to do it, or you are in the mood to do it. This is another reason how i know it is right. I get that feeling like ive been to disneyland for the first time. Not to mention it feels right.

Sincerely,

As it's already been mentioned, I always felt a sort of calling I had to answer. This, combined with curiosity and (later on) my desire of gaining power and improving my life and abilities led me to start practicing the Occult. I also found out that my practices and lifestyle made me feel more complete, at home, and I also have fun conducting them.

~Rin's Reason For Magick~
My magick brings order to chaos. It works
with and restores the Celestial Machinery.
It flows with Divine Bureaucracy. That is
my magick's gift to Creation. However, my
magick could not happen if there were not
those who practiced the antithesis of what
I do. Those who bring chaos to order.
There are also times when to bring order to
chaos, one must dissolved the current order
into a mess before it can be properly re-
assembled.

Eh...well there's the slow de/ascent into the occult, from ghosts and their stories to psychics to witchcraft then on to the rest. When I found out the threefold law didnt work I was only slightly distraught...*grins* that was odd. And so now I have a reservoir of occult in me, for being a part of it means keeping secrets until it is no longer occult. Muahaha. So the number one reason would be intellectual curiosity.

The second, which came along ON this path: To better analyze and improve myself. Then: to implement the practices in my life to help those around me. If everyone did so, then there would be help everywhere.

My purpose for doing magick changes as my understanding of it deepens. I do magick because it´s something that I am. Exploring the wonders of the universe. The system I work with is a LHP system. Perfecting myself so that my soul may step out of order into chaos and live as a creator. In Xtian terms: I´m fullfilling the promise that the snake made to man. To become as (a) God.
Khepheras journey to Amenti and back is another good way of describing my journey.
