Art, Music & Satanism
Original post: ICREX
Greetings earthlings.
I myself come from a Black Metal grounds, and have grown up with that music. BM also was the first thing that got me interested about satanism and occult, which now later on has started to interest quite profoundly. It seems to me, however, that for many BM-musicians - especially for the younger population - such things as occultism and satanism seem to be mostly an image issue. Some people also actually make a distinctive difference between "BM-Satanism" and "Real Satanism". This is not the case for everyone, of course.
People interested in the occult usually seem also to be quite artistic persons also. Just what importance does music and art hold to you, and what kind of art do you resonate with? Do you ever use music & art as a atmosphere creator etc. in your ritual workings, and what kind? From what kind of music & art do you get your most "satanic vibes"? Maybe ritualistic ambient, or classical? (These are the two other genres that I personally like.)
What now came to mind about the nature of satanism, is that the intentions of the artist don't necessarily have to be satanic, for the art itself to be...just as a small curiosity.
I first thought to make a wider opening, but then decided just to make a clean first strike. So, any thoughts from you fellow truth-seekers are welcome. Artist suggestions are also welcomed, but no simple listings please.

I enjoy using oils or charcoals. when the urge arises. it does seem that all present here have artistic fetishes, from love of simple symmetry to the complex motion of trees in a breeze. is it that we look beyond the senses were possible?
I was in the death metal scene, and it was its raw energy that got me hooked. I was singer, i was prophet. there were 3 bands in the inner circle, we had different influences: Grind, Death, Black, yet one thing in common: conviction of essence, the belief in the sound, the message, the morals. ever see a crowd possessed? awesome, carry your thoughts out to hundreds, beautiful. music can be colourful, but i love the sounds that take you on a journey, not through fantasy, but reality.
I also enjoy my partners beethoven echoing through the house, with its conviction of spirit.
I dont like all metal, just any band that get the mind exploring itself. anything that binds the focus, engages the questions.. i like old oil paintings, we did security for an art exhibition recently and walking through the snapshots of peoples lives was awesome
eat the dead? no thanks. open the mind, yes please...

Grieg does have that gothic feel to it. You could also lump into it the Rites of Spring by Stravinski for its shockingly primal/caral overtones and the controversy it inspired when it was first 'released'.

Music and art of all types to me are important because for me it's just something natural. I use music in my rituals. The kind I use is specific songs by Cradle of Filth like Serpent Tongue, Mannequin, A Scarlet Witch Lit The Season, and Nymphetamine.

As gods, we create.
I like to use charcoals. I have found myself creating in trance states, where I'm able to capture on paper indescribable essences...I'm a pretty visual type and I find this media (of art) to be very much a vehicle of sorts. I don't know how much that has to do with being satanic other than my first line above.

I am finding - right now at least - that the ONLY way I can really express things I've learned magickally is via visual graphics. As soon as I try to talk about these things the energy becomes depleted...not so much for me personally...but the real power in the ideas gets somehow strangely diluted...and I'm pretty good with words as a rule. When I express the ideas in pictures a lot goes unsaid but if the image is powerful enough it defines itself so I don't have to try to explain it and the core of it remains intact... It's not a perfect solution but this is not a perfect world. It often seems like the best - and possibly only - way for me to communicate ideas that are oftentimes way out there...
Only I wish I had more compiled...

Yeah...I heavily relate here. In terms of the Work I do, I have a difficult time with words....but the images usually need no explanation. In fact, most things I try to communicate with words tend to come off as kind of aloof and dry...for lack of a better friggin word. Sometimes, words suck.
It's possible that the best arts come from occultists because we are quite accustomed to wheeling and dealing in realms where words/conversations just don't cut it....?

Yeah, that makes sense I think...there's also a built-in problem with words themselves on some level. Words are like tools that lead up to but never really encapsulate actual truth...they just don't cut the mustard somehow. We use words to get at various truths perhaps but the truths themselves are living realities, not ideas at all really. There is a huge temptation when attempting to communicate "logical" truth to use logical explanations for instance but logic - by it's very nature - is always a 50-50 split...that's sort of its job really. So the more profound a given truth may be the more difficult it is to communicate in words somehow. Obviously we still need this tool, but it has its limitations no matter how good you might happen to be at using it. There's an old alchemical axiom - "Beauty is Truth", and vice versa. Somehow in a picture you can approach the beauty in ways that words would never quite be able to manage...even if the "beauty" is really stark and terrifying or whatever...

Good black metal music always gives me great joy, "listen to them, the children of the night, what sweet music they make" and so forth.
However, I don't use any music in any rituals. I'm a traditional satanist and to honor my forefathers I always keep the ritual space free from all modern devices, and that also includes cd-players and such.

i am a bit of a poet, and i find some extreme release in playing dirgy metal guitars or programming electronic musick on my computer. I am more a fan of "metal-core" such as nuerosis or Isis, but i also admire such artists as morbid angel, deicide and napalm death, opeth and some of the industrial bands like skinny puppy or ministry. There is a power with satanic art and culture that i cannot seem to find in any other cultural outlet.

I dont usually like to quote the good old F.W.N. or anyone else, but he said it something like this...whenever we put our ideas into words (=form) or capture it into a picture, we somehow lower it's essense...never actually capture the quintessence..the unfathomable. Maybe that's what keeps everything in motion, never satisfied with the result, always lacking the per fec tio n.
Also, the art that comes as a result of the inspiration itself, is always a by-product, not the vision itself. A way to compute, a channel to reflect...
With a solar knife I split he sky...just listening to Tiamat. Not quite BM, but I recommend. Especially the old ones.

Which isn't in many ways that nice.
p.s. to behold & worship death, the great metamorphosis, you don't have to be a violent person. This is maybe a quite clarity in itself, but felt like something to mention.

Words can't define anything but other words. To fully convey meanting the writer and reader need to have some type of common ground from which to draw an interpretation. I am not saying the written word is useless, it can only just go so far.
With pictures and music, no such commonality is needed. I can imagine fewer things more irritating than seeing an art exhibit and having the artist explaing every little detail - the red symbolizes blood the squggly thing over here is my pet poodle and the hammer is keeping the poodle down which shows the plight of inner city youth for example. Art is like humor - if you have to have an explanation, you missed the joke.
For me, music cuts through the outer civilized veneer and into the primal more emotional core. I have been moved by poetry and picture but have never openly wept or made me want to hit something or drink heavily. Certain songs can do that - whether it be Blue Rondo a la Turk, My Immortal, Duality, The Highyman or Brandenburg #5. There is no literary middle man so to speak.
