Occult Bookshop in Brighton (UK)

Post by jeviscachee »

Hi everyone :) great to meet you all.

My husband and I are thinking of starting up an occult/esoteric bookshop in Brighton, but first we need to work out A) Whether people want one and B) How we can make it work.

If you could fill in the survey about it, I'd be really grateful (sorry, I know it's quite cheeky!):

It's very short! If you have any suggestions I'd be really grateful.

I don't know if Jevisachee is still around THOG.I remember the survey,it was short and asked about preferences and needs.
I believe the locality is one where the OP lives and she saw a gap in the market, not sure though, lol.

I'd love to see a shop or two open near me.The one we had, that was halfway decent has closed.Sigh.[Anyone know of any near Glasgow: let me know plse.Lol]
Thank goodness for internet suppliers. But I do like the physicality of going to a shop and browsing, you can't do that the same way online.

Hey Nahemah, I agree wth you! Whilst there are some occult shops around most are 'fake' and only a few are more genuine. Yeah a descent shop, especially with a good section of 'rare and out of print' books is a good source of inspiration for any occultists! There's one or two in London and only one semi-descent one I've come across in Brighton. Then again Caifornia has a scarcity of descent ones too. Oddly the only reasonable one wth a good shop keeper is in Costa Mesa and is not far from OTO's Lon Milo Duquette-lol

So what is Scotland like for all things occult? Can the subject be displayed openly or is it treated as 'tabo'?

Well, here in Glasgow it's ok .Nobody bothers about the several New Age shops we have or the one remaining Occult shop I know of,but it's quite far up the High street away from the centre of town,so maybe that's why no one is upset about it. [The only one I know of anyway, may be more I don't know about yet? Hopefully, lol]

Whenever I've been in that area the shop is closed,so I don't know if it's good to browse in or not.Other folk say it's alright, but maybe I neeed to start keeping more socially normal hours so I can find out for myself.

I'm not the most socially interactive person,in fact I'm quite anti social at best,so I don't usually give out info on my Occultic practices or beliefs to folk I meet.As far as I can see, from friends and aquaintances, though,it's ok here to be Wiccan or NeoPagan.Among the 'normals',that is.By 'normals' I mean those of a mainstream lifestyle, who fit the 'average person' statistics. You know: everyday job, fashion interested, celebrity watching, own a car,two point four kids, one dog... types. It seems Wicca is percieved as 'good'or 'not bad',as far as I 've heard.I'm a bit of a social recluse,I'm afraid.By choice.Lol,but seriously.

I tend to socialise best among my own 'peer' group - the 'weirdos, goths, bikers and rockers' crowd and we've always been open to ahem... 'unorthodox' beliefs,so it's at my local preferred clubs I find the more LHP and solitary types. We don't judge there,so it's cool, there at least.

I dunno how the 'normal/average' folks would take Satanism or Chaos or Thelema, though.Crowley is still a 'boogey man' to many of my parents generation.Satanic panics are still quite fresh in some of the older folks minds too.So maybe not.
