The Great Work of Magic

Post by the Kite »

In the 1970's Pete Carroll and friends decided they'd had enough of a magical scene full of airy-fairy spiritual flim-flam, bullshit and self-deluded 'magic' in the imagination and the armchair, and they opted for magic that valued demon-strable ;) results. Things happening, goals achieved, enemies smited, sex had, and a growing skill-set in magical arts.

These new kids achieved notoriety as they stripped down magic to basics that delivered results, scaring the wets who had never expected to see shit actually happening, and offending the religiously minded with the new spirit of iconoclasm, of throwing off authority and cynical ransacking of sacred traditions.

Almost accidentally, the name 'chaos magic' eventually stuck as a description of this current, with its sinister overtones overlying its glamour of rock star mathematics. Its leading lights rewrote the grimoire, and somewhere along the line they edited out the Great Work of Magic. Pete Carroll repented of his earlier recommendation to seek the Knowledge and Conversation of one's Holy Guardian Angel, he redefined the word 'gnosis' from 'the direct knowledge of metaphysical truth' to 'any deep trance state,' and instead of the Great Work of Magic he instated the minor work of self-improvement, illumination becoming confused with ego magic.

In his concern to remove the opportunity for transcendentalist fantasy from the work of magic, Pete Carroll threw the baby out with the bath water. I believe it is now time we went and fetched the baby out of the hedge. It's not done by bitching about how crap chaos magicians are and pretending to be the Next Big Thing after chaos magic, as some in a previous incarnation of occultforums used to do. It's done by generating interest in the Great Work of Magic.

At this point, any magician who is already about the Great Work of Magic may with my blessing smirk and mutter 'I told you so.' You did. This is us learning.

So we accept that the Great Work of Magic is what we as magicians are supposed to be about, in the end. It is not merely an intellectual 'illumination' nor the attainment of super magical powers nor of a gooey sense of oneness with the universe. And it is absolutely not an endorsement of any god. It is known in Buddhism as 'Enlightenment,' liberation from the illusions of duality (especially the fiction of a permanent and separate self) and the ability to live this present life to the full.

Illumination in chaos magic focussed on two primary techniques: enchantments on self and invocation. I won't say much about enchantment on self: if you don't know what I'm talking about just ask, right? The techniques of invocation owe much to the founders’ awareness of Tantra. In Tantric invocation we stretch the box of ‘self’ out of all shape and recognition by putting a god in it and identifying with that instead. After having a god stuffed inside it like a bull in your favourite tee shirt, the ‘self’ never quite regains its former shape and smallness. If we do this enough times and with a sufficiently diverse range of gods we can, so to speak, explode the illusion of self from the inside. This form of invocation work does for identity what belief-shifting eventually does for beliefs and paradigms: once you’ve done enough of them you know for sure that nothing you’ve seen ‘is the real one.’

Two notes. Firstly, for our purposes here we’ll mean by the word ‘god’ an experience of:

· that which we could explain as spirit, energy, fragment of our psyche, information matrix or something else;

· with which we can communicate as we would with a human person;

· and which we expect to possess potential beyond the potential we expect to find within our self.

Secondly, as usual in magic, intention counts. Many magicians invoke a god for a specific purpose, perhaps to enjoy a quality of that god for a bit, to obtain knowledge or ability associated with that god in support of some non-illuminatory intention, like blagging that job interview. In Tantra and in our invocation, however, we very specifically wish to challenge our illusion of self.

What can we use then? Gods of the Orange function work well: those concerned with how the gods reach down to us, rather than the other way about. Thoth, Hermes, Mercury, Ganesha, Odin, all display this function. But that said, over time explore a variety of deities to avoid obsession with one type of magic. I have seen someone go ‘orribly bonkers with a combination of long-term drug abuse and an unhealthy preoccupation with invocation of dark gods.

We can make up some suitable entity, as long as it doesn’t simply reflect ourself. We want something from outside the box, yes? The gold standard chaos magic criterion of a good invocation remains that we observe the invocant behaving out of character.

So you get the idea. Find them or make them, but invoke them.

Then again, there's the practice of invoking often that which transcends all, of which the Holy Guardian Angel is but one metaphor. Then there's insight meditation (know therapeutically as 'mindfulness'). Oh, I could go on. But won't. However, I serve notice that this is where we are going, and I invite sane and sincere discussion on it. Resources for such illumination for chaos magicians seem few and far between, but let me recommend my excellent colleagues Alan Chapman and Duncan Barford, whose website The Baptist's Head has a wealth of information. Also their books: Alan's book Advanced Magick for Beginners and their collections of Baptist's Head articles The Blood of the Saints and The Urn. My own, lesser, contributions will arise on the forthcoming relaunch of my website. I'll keep you posted.

I'll bring this unsatisfactory article to an end so we can get started. Chaos magicians (and others): do you want a non-fluffy authentic Enlightenment? If so, join in and say CHOYOFAQUE, which bit of Ouranian Barbaric means 'Doing the Great Work of Magic.'

Yes, yes. "There is no spoon." However, this makes me think that quite seriously, I should be more supportive of poor old Ellis than I am. After all, what's more liberating in that context, than suddenly having the laws of physics behave in unexpected ways?

There's a lot of talk (which Phil Hine mentions, and refutes, rightly, IMNSHO) about how creating servitors somehow constitutes "spiritual materialism," and that seeking super powers is base, vulgar, and immature. I'm sure that whichever narcissists utter those pronouncements enjoy feeling superior to the rest of us, but the bottom line is that they're missing the point.

IMHO, creating a poltergeist servitor that successfully trashes your bedroom, is 100% part of the Great Work. How? Because (at least an initial) part of said Great Work, surely has to be getting free of the idea that Richard Dawkins' model of reality is inescapable.

Someone being able to create a poltergeist servitor which causes disturbances in your house, is something which, according to conventional mainstream science, quite simply should not be possible. So if you manage to do it, that's a very powerful demonstration that maybe mainstream science doesn't quite have the whole story, which again, is also the first step to realising that maybe we really can get free of this atheistic death trap, that some of us mistakenly refer to as the real world.

I created what was essentially a sex servitor which worked via dreams, a while back. It gave me a number of very vivid dreams, which were also interesting in predictable ways. Then a guy I met online scried the servitor a couple of times, the first time being before I'd given him a detailed description of the servitor. He correctly described the thing's appearance. Then he had a hot and sweaty dream himself as a consequence, that night. There was also a scenario where I tried calling the servitor while he was using it, and had my head filled with the image of white stucco concrete while doing it. When I mentioned this to the guy, he had an OMG moment, and told me that a place over the road from his house was made of said material. It isn't a building material which I see in my local area in large quantities, either.

Immature, I hear you say? Sure. Frivolous? Hell yes. But do you want to know what the really relevant part of this is? After it happened, I sat down and scratched my head, and had the thought, "Wow. You mean this magick shit actually works?!" Then once I'd got over the initial shock of that, I started thinking about all of the other possibilities, and realised that there were more of them than I can come up with on my own.

Chaos breaks preconceptions. Chaos re-invites and re-introduces free association thinking. Chaos empowers us by giving us the idea that, even if you're locked in a jail cell somewhere, if you have the ability to draw or create sigils and the ideas behind them, then maybe, you still have the ability to change your reality in potentially any manner you might want.

That isn't part of the Great Work? ;)

Yes indeed Petrus, and please excuse the lateness of my reply.

Great stories, by the way. I love hearing about such episodes.

Illumination can indeed come from the practice of magic as such, because as we observe our results follwing, we challenge our understanding of the world, how it really works, and our place in it. Just as belief shifting eventually clues us in that all beliefs are made up and can work for us if we choose, the regular practice of magic simply dismantles our dualistic understanding of the universe. The challenge that many magicians fail to meet, though, is to their own fiction of a permanent and separate self. They just don't always seem to join the dots. Time to address this one too.

I honestly think there is some cyclic nature to 'low' and 'high' magick. Doing the great work, striving for enlightenment, often brings about greater skill in low magic as a result of one's spiritual transformations. Conversely, doing sorcery often enlightens one. Symbiotically, I'm pretty sure the highest level of either usually involves a high amount of the other, whether by incident or by design. I think absolute adherence to one or the other works to ill effect, usually leaving roadblocks for either path- one being that all self transformation without mastering one's environment sends a subconscious cue that one is not yet mastering them self, while the subconscious/other forces may not be fully tapped via an unevolved mind.

I agree, we should strive for balance in all things.

I absolutely agree. And to restore the balance was what I have in mind with such threads as this. Roll on!

the balance is the most important thing in existence, and, indeed, most "high" magick is simply a more complicated derivation of the "low", easier in theory, but harder in practice. That's my 2c

I agree on every level imaginable, as do (i hope) many in this emerging open occult movement do. We seem to be growing exponentially.
Talking about it among ourselves is one thing, we need to tell everyone WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING.... Spread this message that the world is not static, but malleable by will alone. If a large portion of the population is awakened to this knowledge, we can alter consensual reality itself. How do we do this? well this forum for starters, or DBL, but to really spread this message we need to ADVERTISE, and become the media the masses droll @ its 2010 baby, out of your armchairs. Welcome to the Meme Wars.
Praise be to the mask makers, who give face to the faceless and thus gain communion among higher powers. Hail ELLIS Red Queen of the webs. She and her Marauders have heard your kind word and extend a chance, (nay ... a LINK)To all those here @ occultforum.org as thats what this is all about anyways... connections. I am in complete support of this open source occult community you have created here. Its better than 0f.net after all.... May we meet again komrades in /b/rotherhood and strength, amongst the war drums.

welcome to yourselves.

We are, and I do agree as well, but with some reservations.

I don't view Anonymous as being the answer, personally. The single main reason is because in my own mind, they are sociopathic and juvenile. I agree that the solution for our current mess needs to be collaborative, but I also believe that it needs to be compassionate. If there's one thing Anonymous isn't, unfortunately, it's compassionate. 4chan is a cesspit of anger, nihilism, ugly pornography, (truthfully I have nothing against porn whatsoever, but there's a big difference between tasteful erotic material, and amateur webcam photos of naked 14 year olds) and hate, and I don't feel that they are emotions or elements which ultimately generate anything positive.

The one respect in which Anonymous are positive, is that they have demonstrated that a collaborative human social complex (group mind, if you like) is genuinely possible. That is a genuinely great achievement, but we need to take the proof of that and now use it, to create something else which is LIKE Anonymous, but different merely in terms of the emotions and perspective (atheistic hate and anger, and the desire to smash things) that it is based around.

My own proposed answer to Ellis, would be something along the lines of the Maharishi Effect. Something which is collaborative, yes, and equally reality changing; but something which is peaceful, constructive, and positive.

The problem with Anonymous and Ellis, is that with both of these elements, the focus is always both militant and destructive. They are about destroying things, and given how destructive our existing society is, I don't feel as though that can ultimately generate anything other than more of the same. I feel that instead, we need to work on envisioning what we actually want the future to look like in constructive terms, and then create egregores/perform magical acts that are going to be supportive of that.

Ellis, however, can still be used for this purpose, in addition to new workings which actively seek to generate more positive energies as well. The second sigil in this image, is a filtering sigil which I created in 2007. It can be placed within a multi-sigil set, so that other workings can still harness Ellis' energy, but the anarchic/violent/destructive nature of Ellis' energy is filtered out.

Image

We can then use Ellis as a power source, for empowering the egregores behind such movements as The Venus Project, The Eden Project, and The Orion Project.

One area where Ellis' destructive tendencies could still be very useful, however, is in targetted operations against the egregores behind collaborative intentions which impede or suppress the above three movements; such as, for example, the collective corporate attempt to suppress alternative energy.

If we leave the focus purely on destroying things, however, in the wake of destroying the current society, we will find ourselves with a permanently entrenched, irremovable 1984-type scenario. If we want to avoid that, we need to begin putting our focus behind positive initiatives; otherwise, once we've used the destructive current to destroy the existing scenario, we will have nothing to replace it with, and the authoritarians will enthusiastically replace it for us, with something far worse than what we already have right now.

Another proposed alternative to Ellis, is the creation of self-reproducing, miniature or nanoscopic energetic filtering servitors, for converting the energies of a given area from negative (angry, depressed, sociopathic, disease-causing) to solar energy, which can then be used for any number of positive endeavours. I've created sigils along these lines in the past, and it's quite easy to do.

The term "Ellis," was originally derived from the acronym, L.S., which stood for "Linking Sigil."

The original idea behind Ellis, was to provide an energetic network, which could be used as a power source for individual operations of Chaos Magick. Initial discussions for this took place on the earlier, pre-hack incarnation of this web site. Much valuable occult related information was lost as a result of that site hack, and the story of Ellis' initial development was but one piece of it. Some of the site's contents have been retrieved, however, so it is possible that the original glitter bomb thread may be retrievable as well at some point.

Unfortunately, at more or less the same time, the idea of Ellis was also seized upon by juvenile, angry individuals who wanted the network to become a means, by which they could literally destroy consensus reality itself, as opposed to simply attempting to wake people up, in order to try and create a more positive scenario than what we currently have.

The contents of the network now are dark and chaotic. Large spiders are a consistent image among accounts of those who attempt to skry the network, and another consistent element early on, was broken fingers among those who attempted to work with Ellis. As well as existing as an energetic network, formed by people writing the sigil in different places, there is now also a co-ordinating egregore, known as Ellis, or the Red Queen. (Presumably after the character from Alice in Wonderland)

The identity of the original individual who created the Red Queen is unknown. It is possible that the co-ordinating egregore manifested spontaneously within the network, but from memory within the early period of the network's development, there was deliberate intent to create a co-ordinating egregore for it as well.

In its' raw, unregulated form, I consider Ellis potentially hazardous, (she was specifically designed to be destructive, after all) and that was what motivated me to initially create my filtration sigil for her. The filtration sigil renders Ellis' energies consistent with the intent of the operation at hand, rather than still allowing an element of destructive randomness to be inserted into workings which might otherwise have peaceful or beneficial intentions.

Given how widely the sigil has now been spread, Ellis as a network, is far too valuable a resource, for the energy within it to remain of an exclusively destructive nature. Destruction in some forms is currently needed, but healing at times is called for as well.

My own desire for, and interpretation of, Chaos Magick, is for it to be something empowering, positive, and constructive. That doesn't always mean fairies and sunshine, no. Sometimes it means shadow work; but the point is that even said shadow work is ultimately intended for beneficial ends. I do not advocate destruction, purely for its' own sake.

Sounds like a very good project, destructive or not. The original reason for it seems a bit weak though. Sigil power source? For chaos mages there is the chaosphere, in general there are many many power sources out there untarnished by human weakness and shortcomings. Now that i've expressed my obligatory "you didnt really need to do that in the first place" i can freely say that i love it, i love it when mages get together and do something great, it really brings people together and ecnourages them to do even more magic, on their own and together.

Thanks for the info there guys, it's actually quite important. First off, the Red Queen, as chaos egregores theoretically should when given enough power, has evolved and become an almost fae like personality, from what little I saw on my brief scout of this network. Big spiders are indeed confirmed, and boy, are they territorial little gits! Still, the entropic/negative side of the Red Queen seems to have largely died down, although she's nicked, as someone mentioned (quite a piece of synchronicity!) the idea behind Lewis Carroll's "Red Queen" (a metaphor for evolution... "You must run and run and run to stay in one place...") for herself.

Quite an interesting little project, and, as an FYI, I believe that this project, like many of the other... what did someone else call it? "juvenile attempts to gain energy, not realising it's all around them" or some such? does indeed appear to be contributing to rising levels of magical energies... So that's helped my own infosearch (tangenitally related) a great deal!

She's capricious, I know that much. I've only tried to consciously skry the network once, and didn't like what I got back, although that was a while ago now. I suspect there have probably been some unconscious/nocturnal investigations in my own case, as well. I do a lot of sleepwalking, and I don't remember most of it.

I suspect that the reason why the truly entropic stuff has died down now, is probably because of who more commonly works with her these days. The people who originally put her together had said entropic stuff as their intent, but from what I've seen, most of her recent operators have been much more stable types. That would also explain why the spiders are territorial, though; there has probably been some attempt to force them out by somebody.

Don't get me wrong; Ellis is obviously going to have her own role to play in the grand scheme of things, and it will be a valuable one. I have no problem with promoting her use; just make sure you filter her energy first.
