RPGs and the Occult

Post by dodaive »

Many of the RPG games are deeply embedded in ideas taken from the occult. A funny thought came to my mind inspired by the movie The Karate Kid (1988). Remember the scenes where the karate teacher teaches Daniel-son "wax on" "wax off", "paint the fence", "sand the floor"? Daniel learned a few skills until they were second nature, but still didn't realize it could be applied to the real world. I am wondering if RPG gamers might be in the same situation. RPG gamer learn very complex rules, and guestimating the probabilities of whole ride range of situations. They analyze a person's measure of power using various different scales. The spend deep time in deep imagination and conceptualization building very complex characters, such as NPC (non-player characters). actually this list goes on and on and I can continue if anyone is interested. OK My question is this: If you were paid to teach an RPG gamer how to use his in-depth knowledge in the real world, how would you do it? RPG gamers just may have incredible unrealized powers in the real world, that they never even thought of. Sad thing is that most RPG gamers are also buried deep in escapism and a contempt for the real world.

I was an avid player of many RPG's back in the pen and paper day. I played D&D, Middle Earth Role-Playing, Vampire, Ars Magica, and many MANY others. I think this is a very intersesting question of does RPG's have anything to do with magic or real world applications. I would say in my case it made me more open minded to possibilities and thinking outside the box. It also exercised the part of mind used for visualization which has come in quite handy in ritual work. I guess the biggest thing I got from RPG's was looking into things deeper and not taking them for face value. What are peoples (NPC's) motivations, How can I get them to do what I want, things like that. I beleive that I developed more useable real world skills as a GM/DM than an actual player though.

Another interesting idea is what would happen if the DM/GM brought the game closer and closer to real life. I don't recommend going to close though. The free energy that comes from the game is generated in part, by imagination beyond what's real. Try putting the setting of the story in modern day, Try to connect it with how real magic is performed. This would get us all trying to figure out the probability of magic which has advantages and drawbacks.
