Daily Practice

Post by varmoth »

In my occult readings I recently came across a statement that said something to the effect of: most sorcerers use a daily magickal practice. The presumed reason for this is to keep one 'in tune' for other workings and it was not referring to meditation.

I do not have a daily practice, in fact, I often go weeks and sometimes months between workings and found myself wondering if doing a daily ritual would increase my abilities. If practice really does make perfect, then it would logically follow that it would be a good idea to practice daily (though this kind of thing doesn't always follow logic). So, I have decided to start my own daily practice and monitor my results. However, I'm not sure what, exactly, to do. My first thought was to do a simple banishing or protection ritual but I sometimes feel sort of cut off after and that is basically the opposite of what I am going for.

Do you do have a magickal daily practice and do you have any suggestions as to what I might try?

Many.

For one, I created a permanent "ritual" of creating a new, personal symbol that I elevated to the most important symbol of my path and had it tattooed on myself. It is impossible to forget it. Another daily practice is having an inverted pentagram on me at all times in a way that my awareness will constantly be drawn to it throughout the day. Currently it is in the form of a watch.

These are simple. On to of this I try to think of The Law of Thelema in reference to any situation I come into, apply it to ever word I say, etc.

Just recently I have decided that, starting sunday, I am going to start these: http://hermetic.com/crowley/libers/lib3.html though I will be replacing wrist slashing with the much more sane biting of the thumb. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Daily practice is an essential part of magical development. If you want to become a physicist, you have to read about physics regularly, if you want to become a body builder, you have to work out at the gym regularly, and if you want to become a magician (or a sorcerer), you have to meditate and practice daily. There's no way around it, this stuff is essential, not optional - without it you'll never achieve any true level of magical development, excluding extraordinary circumstances.

I suggest you check out Donald Kraig's Modern Magick for a selection of rituals which can be done daily, and Bardon's Initiation Into Hermetics for a curriculum of meditations and energetic exercises.
"The path of the Sage is called
'The Path of Illumination'
he who gives himself to this path
is like a block of wood
that gives itself to the chisel-
cut by cut it is honed to perfection"

- DDJ, Verse 27

"It's still magic even if you know how it's done." - Terry Pratchett

To be honest, every act of will is an act of magick. The practice is in recognizing it. I'd recommend that ANY time you cause change to occur in conformity to will, whether it is getting a promotion or taking a crap, you recognize it as an act of magick. Everyone does them, magicians are aware of them.

There was a time when I did daily rituals and such. It really did reinforce what I was doing, learning, practicing, hoping to achieve, etc.

Now, living a magical life is just a part of who I am. Lighting the candles on my Ancestral Alter everyday may be considered a ritual by some. To me, I'm just saying good morning. Adding in some kitchen witchery when I make dinner isn't something that I consciously think of - it's just what I do.

There are so many different paths in the occult world and some of then do require or need daily practice. There are some people that are happier when they do daily practice or rituals.

Personally I find my daily ritual a great escape. Unless there's no way I can help it I always, set aside an hour a day. My daily ritual includes a Hermetic thought control exercise, followed by the L.B.R.P, Trataka yoga into meditation; in which I work with lessons from Raja Yoga. Its slowly evolving, and will change to reflect the needs of the day. Experiment with as much as you can, and see what works best for you. I agree with Rin, Donald Kraig's Modern Magick is a good place to start.

This is awesome, it's my take too. I hardly consider what I do "ritual" unless I'm starting some new practice. There comes a time, I don't even know when it was for me, that you transfer from practicing magick to it just kind of being a part of you.
