I'm 37 and my interest in the occult is definitely inspired by music and pop culture. I've been acquiring books at an alarming rate and have read a few of them. I have a very haphazard and fragmentary knowledge base. While I'm more keen on the history at the moment, I would like to work some sort of practice into my life (Not entirely sure how to tell my wife about it though). Mainly so I can relate to the natural world and shed the Judeo-Christian template. I'm interested in Hermeticism, Alchemy, Enochian, and sympathetic magic. I'm not looking to move mountains. I'd just like to evolve a bit - in with the good energy, out with the bad. I'm interested to hear about people's experiences with traditional ritual versus chaos workings. Mainly, I'm just looking for some spirited and intelligent discussion. Cheers!

There is in fact also some sort of tradition in the chaos magick (may sound contradicting though).
As Austine Osman Spare began to form his works at the beginning of the 20 century and as he is often seen as one of the forefathers of modern chaos magick we can see it as a type of tradition.

Most of the known gremoires and traditional works in western magickal systems have their traceable roots around the end of the middle ages and through the early an late renaissance. Additionally there are of course the collections from ancient greece and rome in their fragemented beauty as well as some even more fragmented pieces from old egypt "whatever survived that long time" which are taken from some orders and societies as their traditional "heritage".... even though it mainly consists of those mentioned and often overinterpreted bits and pieces as well as a ton of personal gnostic experience (and some fantasy as I assume, but that is only my humble opinion)

But we must not forget what came in from the site of the churche as the christian influence on the western magick cannot be denied. And this history is of course rather old but in this swamp of obedience, illusions, sins, promises and so on there can stell be found some small traces of older history and tradition.

I listened to thrash and death metal when I was a kid. Now I'm into stoner, doom, and classic metal. It's an interesting phenomenon. Almost all of this music comes out out predominantly Christian cultures. It's presented as a sort of juvenile fascination with the tabboo (which I love, don't get me wrong). Now that magical traditions are becoming more mainstream it seems more people are approaching it with a sense of scholarship.

I cut my teeth to Sabbath and grew up on the classics. Motorhead and Iron Maiden are particular favourites of mine,but I like and listen to most other forms/sub genres /whatever the name is/etc and ad infinitum... of metal also.

I quite like Mastodon currently,though I know that makes me a bit behind the times,lol. [greensmile]

I saw Mastodon open for Dethklok. They put on a good show. If you like Sabbath you should check out Pagan Altar. A friend of mine played their stuff for me a couple years ago and it changed my life.

Iron maiden is still one of the best one can find imho. I came into the metal via medieval metal and symphonic metal and I still hang onto this direction even though I shifted my main focus now a bit more to medieval rock and bard music (and everything else which sound pleasing to my ears and soul). [grin]

personally i think .. (traditional) witchcraft or voodoo or rootwork is more metal than chaos magic(k). chaos magick is more like bach (johann sebastian) - don't misinterpret me - i like bach (johann sebastian) very much.
