Magic Circle Visual Resources?

Post by lupenthewolf »

Hello everyone! So in my (admittedly limited) off time I've been working on a graphic novel of sorts. Several of the characters in the story will use magical circles and I'm looking for inspiration on the visual design for them. Given that it is a visual media I want the circles to stand out but also have that "could be real" quality to them.

If anyone's got an ideas or even better links, that'd be great. Thanks. [grin]

I like to make "circles of fire" as in after I gather my equipment and mark the circle with salt, I light candles all around it. That always looks cool, and since candle flames react to energy, that could be a way to "show, don't tell" as far as storytelling goes. A way to make it look more real could be to draw somewhat mismatched candles with different heights, thicknesses and colours, and maybe not perfectly evenly spaced.

I've done something similar irl myself and it does look kinda cool. I'm mostly looking for things like shapes, patterns, symbols and the like, but I have to admit that something as simple as candles used for effect never occurred to me. Now that I'm thinking about it I'm facepalming at the obviousness.

Ooh, very nice. Thank you Desecrated.

Just out of curiosity, how many of these are real? As in, not from a work of fiction. Regardless they'll make great inspiration. [thumbup]

Well, drawing or creating a circle is basically the creation of a piece of art. Art is a piece of fiction, the word "fiction" says already that much, comming from the latin root verb "fingere" meaning "to creat, to shape, to imagine and to touch". So I would go so far as to say that in their origin all circles are fictional.
