Re: Light discussion about occult books in general.
1. What topic do you need to read more about?
Practical magic and pre-medieval magic.
2. What would you like to see more off in the future of occult books?
Specialized books.
I'm getting a bit tired of the 1000 page" big book of magic", "Big book of all mysteries ever thought off". I would like to see a 150-200 page book about Norwegian magic and nothing else. Maybe a nice translation of some taoist necromancy texts. A thin but in dept guide to the exorcism rites in Russian orthodox christianity.
No need to include the entire history of magic just because you are writing a book about runes. No need to include the entire history of russia, Or include a 300 page essay on Jung to write a book about dreams or astral projection.
Just stick to the topic.
Also, I would like to see peer-review and better editors. There is waaaaay to much false claims and nonsense in books today.
And for gods sake, take a minute to fact check before you send it to the printers.
3. What is the biggest problem with occult books today?
The way I see it there is two areas of problem.
The above stated problems by the larger publications like Llewellyn, weiser and such.
And then we have the limited edition scene....
I understand the market for fine print books. Heck, I have a couple of them myself. But it's starting to get ridiculous.
120 us dollar for a book in alligator skin? 300 dollars for the limited edition of that edition.
Two days after it's been printed, you can find it on ebay for 500 dollars...
Can we please go back to 10 dollars for the paperback, 30 dollars for the hardcover and then maybe 50-75 for the leather edition?
Also please reprint 'out of print' editions that are popular and seem to have costumers lined up.
And please make a paperback copy. There is no need to try and hid the information in these books anymore, we all know that they are going to end up on the internet as a pdf in a month or so. Just give us, that want to read books, (but don't have 1000 dollars a month) a chance to actually buy your books for a decent price.
4. Is there any topic or subject that you can't find books about?
A) There are so many interesting books that are still not translated into English. We are still missing translation off key-books from the French occult revival stuff, some grimores and especially the eastern and middle eastern pre-muslim books.
B) Books about real magic and witchcraft that isn't written by new age hippies.
5. If you stepped into an occult library, what section would you seek out first?
The desk. And ask if I could get a job.
Practical magic and pre-medieval magic.
