We could bridge the gap between science and the occult if somebody could somehow pull it off with a robot or android in the future which the technology for are coming out soon, or to make them vessels for whatever beings can inhabit them. Results could be interesting.
Parapsychological explanation: Same thing as static energy. Movement temporary traps an electric shock in an inanimate object like a carpet.
Life is energy, give enough energy to an object and it gets "life"
Metaphysical explanation: The departed soul, now without a host/body finds it way into a new host/body.
ANYHOW.
Sealing or binding before burying is often the best. I'll give some examples.
1. Put the object in a paperbag, write a X on both sides. (x for "Do not want") Then bury it as far away from your house as possible.
Other protective symbols can be used.
2. Use white yarn to tie 9 knots around the object, then bury it. Alternatives with red yarn and 13 knots exists as well.
3. Put it in a box, Cover the inside with salt, Bury it.
4. Mirror box, put mirrors on all side inside a box, put object in box, bury.
5. Break the object, throw it in moving water.
6. Break the object, tie it up with yarn. Then use Rowan twigs to bind it. Put it in a brown paper bag, take a black marker and draw the protective rune Algiz on both sides of the bag. Shake salt inside the bag.
Bury it or dispose of it in a public trashcan. The further away the better.
When you get home, do a cleansing and protection ritual.

Why you shouldn't burn it: Fire represent the element of passion, energy and action. Burning something might instill it with just does qualities. You are giving it freedom and power to move.
An object ties the energy to itself. As long as it is in the object, you know where it is, burning the object can let the thing loose.
Why bury: Earth is a very passive energy. It's also great for grounding. Things that are put in the ground tends to stay in the ground. Energy that is put into the earth cannot move about. Or at least have great trouble doing so.
Moving water: Trowing objects into water has been used by many different cultures for many different reasons. One is that water/mirrors are seen as a portal to the other world/worlds and therefore you can send back an object by throwing it there.
Water is also a calming element, an object that is put into water calms down.
If you can find a river that runs northward you can purify an object by submerging it for 3 days.
The important factor: Will
Just putting something away isn't enough, You need to really
put it in the ground with your will as well. Bury your emotion and desires with it as well.
That is why a simple X can do just as well as a complicated protection symbol. As long as you draw it with a serious mind that you DO NOT want this thing back, it will hold the object.
This is why I like the moving water aspect, because if you keep it in a box, there is always the temptation of opening the box, but breaking it and throwing it away pretty much assures that the object is gone. It means that you have to be serious about removing it
