Law Vs Chaos

Post by DarkSchneider »

I was wondering recently, if there is any legitimacy in the idea of Chaos, as it seems to be a popular idea in Chaos Magick, Discordians etc.

What makes Chaos seem like a plausible way of action? I'm not trying to be critical, rather, I'm curious. I understand our universe is composed of Law and Chaos, but it would seem that our society prides itself on being organized, orderly and by the books, for the most part. Then, you have people who'd rather do as they feel regardless of the laws, the dogmas, etc. This includes the occult.

I know this isn't Dungeons and Dragons, and that Chaos magick or discordianism doesn't necessarily have to do with literal chaos worship, but it's still in the name. Surely there is a reason for that?

I'm asking this question more for myself, because I'm trying to decide if I prefer lawful or chaotic paradigms. I had a friend here once, suggest to me that chaos magick was not for me at all, suggesting law in it's place. Are there generally, groups that emphasize lawful thinking in magick? I only like chaos magick for the flexibility and eclecticism. I'm sort of all over the place, unfocused. I might actually benefit from a structured form of magickal practice.

So generally, what do you guys think? Is law preferred to, than chaos? Do any of you prefer one way of thinking over the other?

Of course, there's always balance between the two ;)

Without order nothing can exist, but without chaos nothing can evolve.

the point of chaos magick is to be able to incorporate all known practices under one umbrella paradigm to come up with solutions that work, without having to take a step back into "worship" of anything less than the Ultimate. it's a path of creativity, studying anything, and understanding how everything comes together to form and manifest what we see around us every day. it's an escape from organized religion without falling into the pandemonium that is agnosticism, and then some.

then you have traditional chaotes who worship cthulhu who regard lovecraft like a prophet. by that extension shouldnt we be looking to shakespeare to try to learn witchcraft?

Lovecraft is the only origin for Cthulhu, thankfully witchcraft existed before and outside of Shakespeare. But you could start caliban-ism or something if you're a Shakespearean.

The ancient Greek version of Yin and Yang was Love and Strive. Study the philosopher Empedocles.

It's not a "versus" scenario. They are two parts of a larger system.

I figure that law and order to some degree is favored. At least in terms of society. It would seem anarachy has not really been a practice for mainstream society, to my knowledge. I wonder what a world in that sense would look like. Either way, I'm sure we have all seen the failings of modern political issues and organizations.

But I'm glad it is not a versus scenario. Also I am glad to know that it's not really wrong to appreciate chaos. At the same time, I'm appreciating law as well.

I have to be honest, I'm just figuring myself out as usual :P

I'll meditate on the subject tonight.
