This discussion has been primarily about tarot readings, as an astrologer I thought I would say a few things.
Now, I do tarot reading for myself, friends, and family, and have only done one reading for money. It sufficiently scared me away from doing it again (The woman I did the reading for was in a desperate state, and ended up doing 7 reading is one sitting, for over 2 1/2 hours. It was a validation in one aspect: the cards said the same thing all 7 times, with some of the same cards coming every time. The woman would not get the answer she was looking for. In retrospect, it was stupid of me to allow this to happen.)
As an astrologer, I don't make enough money to quit my day job. I think an astrologer needs a large clientele to make it on astrology alone. I have found that most of my clients are either one time only, or once annually. I have a few which are more frequent, but my experience most people just a) want their natal chart, b) want their solar return chart each year, and c) people who are in a current crisis of some sort.
So I haven't quit my day job yet.
But astrology is a bit different than tarot I think, in that tarot requires a higher degree and more finely tuned intuition. In astrology, half of it is science, the position of the planets won't change no matter how intuitive I am. And they established meanings. But the second half is art, or intuition if you will. Knowing what to emphasize in a chart can be tricky, especially when nothing jumps off the page and gets my attention.
I also think each person attracts a certain clientele. Most of my readings are for alternative health care practitioners, bodyworkers, those seeking the spiritual path. And that is good, because I have great difficulty with the classic questions: when and where will I fall in love? will i make lots of money? is my mother going to die? etc.
I also had a woman "test" me once, giving me false birth data. I then talked about all the issues I saw in the chart, and then she informed me I was wrong about almost everything, and that she had given me the wrong time and day of birth. she thought she had debunked me, I guess, but I look at it as a validation. Had I been able to give her an accurate reading with bad birth data, that really would have been a feat of magick! I am an astrologer, not a demigod.

Thanks for the reply - I have only just had the time to give your post a proper read.

That's another thing that concerns me sometimes - that if I ever did a tarot reading for money, I would attract a clientele who refused to accept a reading they didn't like the sound of. And then get abuse for it. Interesting experience though - seven identical readings!

I haven't studied astrology, and I already have enough on my plate with learning the tarot. So it will be a while yet if I ever do decide to have a stab at astrology. But if I ever did get into it, I would have thought that there would be good work with magazines and newspapers. Glossy magazines like Prediction probably pay well for articles on astrology. In-house astrologers get their own columns, although it probably isn't great money (unless you're Russell Grant or Cainer from the Daily Mail). It could be a good way if making a name for yourself and attracting more customers though. Especially if writing is another skill of yours.

on my website www.kthuluproductions.com we recently put in a tarot reading option. i have been doing readings for many years for free, but my "clients"(?) usually scoff at this idea and leave anonymous gifts. i hate doing readings for people i know. furthermore i hate word of mouth for personal face-to-face readings because there is too much psychic dandruff on some people... i like it much better this way, i still get to do the reaings in exactly the same way -but out in e-space. that being said, although theres plenty of money to be made, lacking the proper advertisement, the tarot readings are among the slowests things we sell...
