[ Katagami-sama ]

Note: This work began in January of 2006

誕生日: 一月五日二千六年

This work began here in Occult Forums in response to a thread (now lost to us) regarding all-purpose Servitors. What came of it, for me, was a body of work that I never expected (and by/for which I am deeply intrigued/grateful).

Katagami-sama (the name) is, in actuality, an acronym for a much longer name. The characters used to spell Katagami-sama's name mean "God of Forms." By "forms," the implication is of "martial arts forms." But as it stands, this name "God of Forms" is meant as a slight pun concerning his fox-spirit attributes of shape-shifting.

As a being, Katagami-sama is vast. In fact he (and I use that pronoun lightly) has multiple aspects, forms, or "souls." Well over 200, in fact, each representative of some part of him. These souls are like individual beings themselves and, together, they contribute to and complete the overall picture of Katagami-sama.

Perhaps, one of Katagami-sama's greatest asset is his growing understanding of hitsuzen. The Kodansha Japanese Desk Dictionary (Second Edition) defines hitsuzen as:
A natural fore-ordained event. A state in which other outcomes are impossible. A result which can only be obtained by a single causality, and other causalities would necessarily create different results.
I will be using this thread to build upon Katagami-sama, proposing experiments, posting results, and offering contracts on his behalf. Please be advised: Everything surrounding Katagami-sama and his operations will be terribly auspicious. I may not speak in common Chaos Magic lingo (whatever that means), but you're absolutely free to think in such terminology. The reason for this is to build a reality around Katagami-sama that is consistent with his nature(s).
Image
Contracting Katagami-sama

To form a contract with Katagami-sama, you have to first prepare a place of honor for him, or a small shrine. The center piece of which would be a vertical strip of paper, or a scroll, with his name written in Japanese (you can either print this scroll out or make your own copy by hand). There should also be a place for an offering dish, or bowl. Something that would be safe for holding anything from candles (for offering light) to food.

It can be as simple or as elaborate as you choose. You should then write or print out a contract, detailing what you would like from him and what you will be giving in return (the minimum requested is one offering once a week for a full lunar cycle, but you're free to give more if you wish). You should only sign and date it on the first day of a new lunar cycle - it is on this same day that you will make your first offering.

The contract, once it is signed and dated should be rolled up tightly and bound by thread or wax, and either attached to the bottom of the wallscroll (bearing his name), or kept in the offering dish for the duration of the lunar cycle.

Once this is set up, it is customary to clap twice, loudly, so as to draw his attention. You can then address him aloud or in thought, greeting him, introducing yourself, pointing out the place of honor or shrine, the offering, and the contract. You should also repeat the content of the contract directly to him. If you want to help keep his attention during this opening contact, burning a sweet-smelling incense or making your first offering one of fish or cooked rice is ideal (but not necessary).

Completion of the formalities (the conversation, or addressing) marks the beginning of the contract which will run for twenty-eight days. It is very important that you make weekly offerings (at the minimum). You can leave offerings in the dish for as long as you like, but twenty-four hours is the standard.

When the twenty-eight day has come, you can clap twice again and address Katagami-sama to state the end of the contract, and that you have fulfilled your part of the agreement by making the proper offerings. You should be aware that depending on you, the situation, and other factors, you may not see immediate results. Or you may get your results within the twenty-eight day period. Regardless of either, you must make the weekly offerings (it's just polite). You can then take down the shrine or place of honor.

You may either keep the wallscroll and contract, burn them, bury them, shred them and scatter them into the wind, or dispose of them in water.

[ Defining Soul ]
The defining soul refers to Katagami-sama's essential core, the singular unifying or overarching concept that binds and links all other aspects and functions. If Katagami-sama were to manifest a physical body, it is the defining soul that would inhabit it. Katagami-sama's defining soul is:
  • The First and Most Brilliant Celestial Architect
[ Component Souls ]
Component souls refer to the eight souls surrounding the defining soul that all lend concepts, realms of influence, areas of expertise, et cetera of unique qualities to the overall Katagami-sama. They are connected to one another by the defining soul. They are as follows:
[ Third-Circle Souls ]
Third-Circle souls are on the same order of magnitude as the Component Souls. Although I have only listed ten, there should be eleven. I simply haven't met the others yet, or figured out who/what they are. They are connected to multiple Component Souls, and to each other.
The Defining Soul, the Component Souls and the Third-Circle Souls each have seven Second-Circle Souls. These are the various expressions of their oversoul. For example, if Windgrace, He Who Paints the Sky with Stars were to represent the arts, his Second-Circle Souls would include personifications of painting, dancing, singing, music, drawing, sculpting, et cetera.

Each of these Second-Circle Souls would finally have five First-Circle Souls who may or may not have names, they may collectively be known as a type of spirit such as the "spirit of brushes" or a species of water elementals.

Mao-chan [ 大太阳熊猫禅犹如金色山 ]
The Spirit of Forests and the Earth

Earth endures in a way that does not violate the impermanence of the Ten Thousand Things. Like a Mountain, one is taught to sit, to endure, to be patient.

Like the warm light of the Sun at dawn, Mao-chan chases away the darkness of mental obscurations and ethical downfalls. Like the rising Sun, e teaches one to go forth, to be brave, to be kind.

Residing in wisdom's excellent bliss, Mao-chan takes the form of a panda, wearing the simple clothes of a monastic with a sting of 108 beads. About Mao-chan is the golden glow of eir perfected body, speech and mind.

  • Yinyue, The Silver ForestYinyue, rather than showing up as a person or an animal takes the form of a forest of silver trees, with leaves made of thin pearl and green jade that are as flexible as actual leaves. Yinyue represents the grace and majesty of the colours and imagination of nature, of things that grow.

Yinyue encourages growth of all kind - personal growth, verdant growth, unwanted growth, unexpected growth, et cetera. E also represents the silver lining in every cloud, that beautiful edge of undeniable truth even in the face of the darkest storm.

Dai-kun
The Resplendent Daimyo of Heavenly Grace and Beauty

The essence of beauty, grace, and liberation from things that appear to be fixed (though I know they really are not) takes the form a blindingly bright, almost human-shaped being. Peering into its radiance, I can barely make out the flowing of robes of celestial silk, and I can almost recognize that it has three heads - a lion's, a hawk's, and human. On top of those are three more, smaller heads - all made of shining gold and in the shape of children who sing aloud the Hymn. This servitor has six wings.

While a being of liberation is, naturally, free from the bindings of names and appearances, for the sake of human interaction, it has taken on this appearance and does not object to being referred to by an empty name. For here is a being by the empty name of the Resplendent Daimyo of Heavenly Grace and Beauty.

Now that this being has a hollow appearance and an empty name, an immaculate golden ring has appeared above the crown of its head to symbolize its apparant stabilization of this form and these functions under this name. About its aura, behind the singing, is a low rumbling sound like the rushing of vast waters - but it is only background "noise", and now that I look at its feet I can see that it is standing in a very shallow pool of celestial nectar, in which a serpent biting its own tail circles around the Resplendent Daimyo.

  • Meiyin, The Song of All
Meiyin often manifests as a golden-haired woman of exceptional beauty and charisma. She wears an ornate, white and gold venetian-style mask that covers the upper portions of her face. Whenever she speaks, it is always in song. Around her neck is an ornate collar made of white jade and set with a large golden topaz.

Meiyin can weave any song into reality. She can turn simple lyrics into magical incantations which yield real results. As the essence of experience contained within all lyrical works of art, Meiyin has an intimate understanding of everything ever sung about and, as such, she is a Muse Goddess. Indeed, she has much in common with the Greek God, Apollo.

Dargen
Scion of Darkness and Guardian of Divine Integrity

The essence of Willpower, Valor, Temperance, and Conviction - sometimes wearing armor, sometimes not. Sometimes bearing a weapon, sometimes not. He is the beacon of necessary conflict, of healthy challenges, and is a clearer of obstacles. He has a perfect understanding of war and its consequences. He has nothing but contempt for those who have a hard-on for unnecessary conflict.

Dargen's armor is forged of various kinds of whisperglass that change depending on the situation. At times his armor can appear to be made of black obsidian-like glass, with or without a helmet and mask. Other times it can be imperial red with detailing in gold, with or without a helment or mask.

When he is without a helmet, he is a handsome but determined man in his late twenties with olive-coloured skin, and burning red eyes. He typically has minimal facial hair forming a thin beard along his jaw. He never has long or medium-length hair.

Dargen's weapons can range one-handed swords (with a shield in the other hand, or some other weapon), daggers, axes, hammers, maces, measures, greatswords (two-handed swords), katana, spears, poles, rods, staves, bows, crossbows, or guns. The material and design of which can (and does) shift depending on the circumstance, mood, or whim of its wielder.

  • Śadau, The Deer That Hunts The ManThe source of his joy lies in adversity, and as fire tests gold, so does misery test strong men and women. Śadau is the antagonists who thrusts greatness upon those who do not have it. He is the first to show you your vulnerabilities if you're not already aware of them, or working with them. He will push you until you push back.

He is the second-worst adversary you could ever have, the first being yourself. Through his work, one may learn to conquer both adversaries.

Tianshui
The Celestial Waters that Illuminate the Heart and Mind

Tianshui (tee-en shway) manifests as dream-like chimera with a gossamer foals head, four sets of gazelle horns that occasionally reshape themselves like tendrils of smoke, with gold-veined pearl scales covering most of eir body, eight eyes made of sapphire, and six carp fins forged of whisperglass. I originally mistook Tianshui for Katagami-sama himself, but was corrected soon after.

E is connected to dreams, moving water such as rivers, the Moon, and the patterns that emerge amidst the endless sea of collective thought and behavior across the realms of sentient beings. There is something of Tianshui in every dream, and for that reason e is known by countless other names, titles and descriptions - some of which contradict one another.

Of all Katagami-sama's aspects it is perhaps Tianshui who is the most familiar with hitsuzen. E is both the keeper of secrets as well as the one who reveals them, unless they choose to keep or reveal themselves, that is.

  • Rith'Mau, The Sigil's DreamerRith'Mau appears a slender androgyne with four arms, usually seated in the lotus posture while floating three or four feet above the ground. Eir skin is the colour of the sky, with wide empty eyes the colour of which is the whites of clouds. In each of eir four hands is a calligraphy brush shimmering with essence with which e sketches sigils into the air around em. These sigils burn with a cool light until dissipating utterly.

Rith'Mau governs sigils, the processes by which they are generated, and the circumstances that allow them to function. E also holds dominion over logos and other symbols of almost sigilic qualities. E has a perfect understanding of how the mind, and reality, work with sigils.

Neduin
He Who Illuminates Both Worlds with Majesty and Power

Experienced magicians and mystics know that the world of thought and the world of action are not as separate as they may seem. The distinction between the dreaming and the waking states being to blur the more one explores altered states of mind and, indeed, one can lucid "dream" new probabilities while you're still awake.

Neduin is the personification of moving ideas, places, objects, people, events and other abstractions back and forth between the Dream and what we see and experience when we're not sleeping. It is Neduin who is at the heart of a child's imaginative ability to transform a cardboard box into a starship, or the adult's ability to envision something grand or humble and have it come to life for everyone else.

From the birth of nations in our waking world, to our dreams reflecting what has taken place in the course of a day's events, Neduin builds bridges, paves roads, opens doors or otherwise links what is dreamt and what becomes real.

Shanghuo
Loud Reciter of Hymns and Efficacious Prayers

Shanghuo takes the form of a flame that chants hymns to eight smaller flames around it, those flames in turn chant those same hymns to sixteen other flames around them which chant to thirty two around them, et cetera until the 128 flames at the periphery of Shanghuo hear the hymns and respond with prayers that make their way back to the first flame.

This component soul represents the idea of hierarchies for Katagami-sama. The idea that there is a chain of command, a social structure, a political structure. Shanghuo inspired Confucianism, the Caste system of India and the unofficial class system of the West (as well as military chains of command and hierarchies within corporations).

  • Ō-shan, The Prince of TowersŌ-shan appears most often as a twelve-foot tall man made entirely of white marble with green jade eyes. He is an architect of civilizations, inspiring the layout of cities, their infrastructure, and even the evolution of entire nations from a purely architectural aspect. He is the reason why all roads led to Rome, why vital railways in America, Europe, Japan and China were conceived of and completed.

He participated in the construction of the power grid, and continues to assist in its expansion and upkeep. His First-Circle souls are responsible for many of the different styles of structures that have appeared throughout human history and into the present day.

Wow, this is marvelous work. I had actually recently begun research into Japanese magic in order to explore Daoism, Onmyodo, Shugendo, Mikkyo, Ancient Shinto, etc., so I can integrate it into my practices. This has the perfect flavor and I'll definitely seek to contract Katagami-sama in the near future.

Thank you Rin Daemoko!

(EDIT: I have a question and a favor to ask though.

I'm wondering why the te-form of "kagayakashii" is used on the scroll. Is there a reason why it should be conjunctive? My first instinct would be to expect it in plain adjectival form to describe "taiyou." But, being in te-form, is it contextually being used as a descriptor for Katagami-sama?

As for the favor, I like the background used on the scroll and am wondering if you could post it without the black text. I'd want to attempt to print it out on rice paper and then write over it. Thanks again.)

Taifeng
The Shaping of Crows in the City of Hesitation and Doubt

Taifeng manifests as a seven-foot tall suit of white jade armor inlaid with intricate gold patterns telling the story of Taifeng's accomplishments. The armor itself is inhabited by the wind. As the principle of motion, the sovereign of journeys, Taifeng has influence and understanding of travel and what results from it. For this reason, e is connected to Mercury, Hermes, Anubis, Charon, and other deities whose functions hinge upon coming and going.

With the power to open the way to the spirit realms, Taifeng is often present at the beginning and end of the Hungry Ghost season, at Samhain, and other times of the year when the spirits of the dead return to the lands of the living. Taifeng is also usually present whenever someone through whatever means journeys from the lands of the living to the realm of the dead, or the spiritual.

Because of eir extensive travels, e is fluent in virtually every language with an almost perfect comprehension of various cultures' rites and social norms. This makes Taifeng the most socially aware and intelligent of Katagami-sama's aspects. As a natural diplomat, e also works well within bureaucracies.
Image
[ Second Circle Souls ]
  • Illora, The Silent Wind Illora is the reason why Taifeng is said to dwell in the City of Hesitation and Doubt. She is literally a quiet, foreboding wind that carries uncertainty everywhere she goes. She is that sense of thinking before acting, encouraging you to re-evaluate something before proceeding with action. She is alive in the phrase "measure twice, cut once." In this sense, hesitation and doubt are not intended to be defeating, or inherently bad things, but vital, necessary and important qualities.

She is that sense of intuition that whispers in your ear that something just isn't quite right.

  • Kuroden, The Black Crow that Twists the Skies Kuroden often takes the form of a murder of crows arranged in the vague shape of a much larger crow. He is the spirit of violent storms, both in nature and in the mind. He is the typhoon that brings the rainy season to the equitorial regions of the world, the tornado that wipes towns off the map, the nightmares that startle you awake, the bouts of mental anguish that are accompanied by anger, frustration and the desire to lash out.

Just as everyone needs to get angry sometimes, just as the cycles of nature depend on the timely arrival of the rainy season, Kuroden is a necessary if frightening and unpleasant being. If you've been bottling up your emotions for too long, it is he that either encourages you to let them loose, or arranges for circumstances that will lead to just that. When he is allowed to do his work properly, what is left after he passes is a sense of clear air, a new open-ness, the calm after the storm.

That was my intention, yes, to have it more of a descriptor than a formal name. I very much like the idea of names being descriptive as well as serving as just names (which is reflective in my affinity for titles such as He Who Illuminates Both Worlds with Majesty and Power and such.

Lethe
Thundering Across the Plains Into Oblivion's Embrace

Lethe is also known as the Maiden of Endings. She is both a woman and a horse, with eyes as brilliant as a flash of lightning, whose running is the sound of thunder as she chases, carries or otherwise brings people, places, events, ideas to their natural conclusion. She has a hand in the processes of rebirth and ascension.

She has a perfect understanding of the Void, the force of Oblivion and its agent, the Abyss. Lethe knows how something can come from nothing, and so human ideas about the zero-point field make her smile. Calling her death is an understatement, as death describes such a narrow field of her division of Endings. Lethe embodies the concept of banishing, of moving on, of transition from what is to what is not.

Naorin
The Voice of the Wind in the Trees

Naorin governs speech - speaking and what is spoken. E has a perfect command of all languages and their dialects. It is from Naorin that all names proceed, the spirit of etymology, the power of knowing a thing's true name, and the majesty of spoken word. Naorin scoffs at the human phrase "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me", knowing better than that. Naorin says that sticks and stones can break your bones, and those are things that can heal, but words can shred your soul and mind for all eternity.

E often takes the form of a woman wearing a green and white imperial qipao, with intricate but not necessarily elaborate hairpieces of gold. E usually carries a jade scroll case wherein is the Second Sutra of the Proscribed Blossom of Ages, a single text that contains the name of everything that ever has been, or ever will be. It is Naorin that knows the true name of all things and no things.

Wan Shi Tong
He Who Knows Ten Thousand Things

As one who presides over knowledge of all kinds, including the keeping and divulging of secrets, Wan Shi Tong governs information and lore. He also has a perfect understanding of all methods to discern information, to investigate or otherwise find something out. He is a patron of researchers, scholars, academics, and the curious.

Wan Shi Tong has been known to manifest as an albino owl, a very proper female librarian, a bearded Imperial Chinese scholar, a book that writes itself and changes its contents, a large crystalline eye, calligraphy written in the air that continuously erases and re-writes itself, and many other forms.

Naturally, Wan Shi Tong has been heavily involved in the development and progression of telecommunications - including the internet and its gradual integration with telephone and mobile phone networks.

Thank you for elucidating my question and for providing the background for katagami-sama's ofuda.

I am considering purchasing and making all that is necessary for a basic kamidana. I will break it in, so to speak, with a Shinto deity first. But after a bit perhaps even Katagami-sama's ofuda will grace my shrine, :D I think that would please katagami-sama, heheh. Unfortunately I cannot forsee when this will happen :(

Keep up the excellent work!

Very shiny! You know, I just cleared off a shelf in my bedroom which was littered
with junk I never used. Perhaps I could do some additional purifications and
transform it into a kamidana. Although some of the more proper ritual artifacts that
are typically seen in a kamidana are probably out of my price range and availability.

Well, then, perhaps I can enjoy one vicariously through you should you decide to
post pictures of yours when it is finished. Possibly maybe. I'm sure Katagami-sama
would be very please to have a place in or on a kamidana. Good times to be had!

Will do Rin! Right now I'm feeling that I will set up a place of honor for Katagami-sama on the kamidana to left of where I will enshrine the Ofuda of Amaterasu Okami. Hopefully that will work out okay. I like the idea of a kamidana, but I'll take some liberties with it for flexibility's sake. I'm also interested in the koshinto ideas of Motohisa Yamakage, who seems to assert that shinto originally had no shrines (which makes sense) and stresses the nondogmatic and nondoctrinal core of shinto. Sometimes kamidana can be a little too materialistic (high end kamidana and home Buddhist altars can cost thousands...) and some conventions might be inconvenient for my purposes. When things come to fruition pictures will definitely show up here.

Looking at some of the shrines on a site I found, I wonder if it may be much less
expensive just to purchase some wood, some wood glue (or perhaps not) and
make one yourself? Of course I have none of the tools, but a friend of mine does
and perhaps would be interested in helping me if I ever seriously wanted to build
one. The simpler ones look like they'd be pretty easy to construct on one's own.

Also, I rather like the sound of this Motohisa Yamakage. To the research-mobile!
